Anything Goes

Thanks to the magic of streaming, on a cold and snowy night on an island off the north coast of Scotland (best part of England), I'm just back from the local flicks, after watching the revival of Anything Goes, from the Barbican Theatre in London. Music and lyrics by Cole Porter, book by P. G. Wodehouse.
71 year old Robert Lindsay,  hoofing it with the best of them, stole the show as the louche and gurning 13th most wanted gangster in America. Sutton Foster, possessed of one of those hard Broadway Belter voices, danced with indefatigable stamina and verve, whilst singing. Honest not Invent - whilst singing.

Tap-Dancing Sailors
Fabulous frocks, retro styled hair and make-up - you can see why the Presbyterians are against this sort of thing - it absolutely ruins you for normal life.
Do you think it is too late to learn to tap dance?

Definitely too late to learn to dance like Russian athletes. I've seen the Red Army doing this male synchronised stuff, with set pieces of spectacular individual show-offiness. It is almost incredible, but where are the pretty girls, the dresses, the show-stopping frocks? A much harsher tradition of masculine perfection - and just a tad, whisper the word - gay.

Hmmmm- synchronised stamping. No, just teasing, mr mike, it is a truly impressive spectacle, albeit in a very different tradition to that of the English-speaking nations. And very beautiful daughters of Mother Russia. Thank you for the link.
