I have had two incidents when people laughed at me for buying an album. This was one, the other, The Wailers debut album, Catch a Fire.
Both still stand the test of time. Cooder, and though I didn't really know it at the time, the Dead, introduced me to old time American music, black and white. Tip of the hat to them both.
Mr. Smith, if you don't have it, I highly recommend the soundtrack to The Long Riders. And the film as well.
I have it, Mr elby, although my favourite Cooderwerk is Boomers Story. A young murderer I once knew gave me a tape of it nearly thirty years ago and said Ishmael, you'll never grow tired of this and I never have, just as, probably, he never got over being a murderer; it is, as you say, that old time music, white trash romance and nigger hollers, western swing and gospel, railroads and cotton fields; thinkin' 'bout that woman I love, run away with another man. Man's a fucking giant.

Absolutely. Saw him a couple of times in his Moulah Banda Rhythm Band guise, Bobby King et al, backing singers to die for; party time for all.
"Little sister, won't you do what your big sister did?" :-)
