The Sunday Ishmael: 08/11/2026

There he was again, on Laura's Sunday morning politics show, having opinions.
Long standing ishmaelites will remember that Simon Schama is not in the high water of my good opinion, ever since I came home from work one day to find that mr ishmael, energised by his viewing the previous evening of episode 1 of Schama's History of Britain in which  Schama strode moodily across Orkney's beaches and poked his nose into Maeshowe and Scara Brae, had decided that the only way to survive the imminent collapse of civilisation was to move to Orkney. From his computer in the heart of civilised England, mr ishmael had researched Orkney and informed me that houses could be purchased on a credit card and your dinner could be pulled from the sea. Swept away by the force of his eloquence, we did indeed move to Orkney, six months later.  So I blame Schama.
So the Blog is not only British, readers, but had an Orkney perspective - Orkney being an archipelago of 70 islands, 20 of which are inhabited, off the north coast of Scotland. mr ishmael and I moved to Orkney 25 years ago to make better life, mr ishmael having been persuaded by Simon Schama  striding across windswept beaches and fondling standing stones and divers Neolithic archaeological remnants. mr ishmael is no longer with us, but has left us his rich treasury of writing to cheer the darkness. And I, after all my wanderings, I'm now back in Yorkshire.
mr ishmael himself was not keen on Schama, though, as you can see from the following opinion pieces:
"An irrelevant mouthy show-off, trashy; Schama crushes enthusiasm and curiosity beneath a cavalcade of wordy, name-dropping, punning, put-downs; contrived, over-written, moribund, an hour watching this jumped-up irritants produces TV’s desired effect of making the viewer feel lesser, patronised, nobody-ised. Rory Stewart's analysis of our self-interested carve-up of the Middle East is not his exclusive property but his simple freshness of approach makes Simon Schama look like Ena Sharples. Historians in the main, the teevee ones, anyway, and Screeching Schama in particular, are vain, stupid arseholes,  peddling the tawdry and salacious,  as though they, too, like the govament, were a branch of skymadeupnewsandfilth, which of course  they are, unless we are talking about Mr Tony Robinson of the ghastly TimeTeam programme who inhabits his own entirely unique  region of unspeakability. Simon Schama, queening, in his leather jacket, twittering, gushing, punk academe, illustrates in clunking, laboured effort, the rankness of the NewLabour Project."
Anyway, he is 81 now, but still opinion-heavy and very happy to share those opinions, for an appropriate fee, on the Sunday politics show.
Lisa Nandy, Remainer, MP for  Wigan, where 63.89% voted to leave the European Union in the 2016 EU referendum, whereas 36.11% voted to Remain,
poppied up and dressed in black ready for the annual celebration of war on Remembrance Sunday, had crassly decided that today is a good day to announce closer links with Europe, as the Labour party grandees inexorably, but stealthily, move the country in the exact direction it rejected 10 years ago. They just do what they want to do and obscure their intent with nonsense about buying lots of tinned goods and a wind up radio. Tesco had sold out of water last Wednesday, as the carpark filled up - on a Wednesday! with folk desperate for corned beef and water. And toilet paper. And little spades to dig holes in their gardens to bury their poop. This particular advance on the Europe initiative is called the Erasmus Scheme, the thin end of the wedge that will allow unfettered migration of young people across Europe. She justified her announcement by telling us that Brexit has failed, that Britain needs to get closer to Europe, and that because today's the day that teddy bears have their picnic - oops, that we remember the many people who died at the hands of Europeans in two wars  (I'm thinking Germany, Italy, Spain and French collaborateurs), so it is a perfect day to mark their sacrifice by cosying up to the Europeans.  This came after Michel Barnier, Brussels’ former Brexit negotiator, had said the UK would need to accept free movement if it wants closer ties in future. And there would be no special deals for Britain. And that we wouldn't get the discount on annual fees that we enjoyed prior to Brexit. Accept the lot or stuff yourselves. There'll be no cherry picking. Including the Euro, sans doute.
Still, nothing will deter the Labour Establishment, with their open borders philosophy and crying need for cheap labour. I'm beginning to think that they are actually evil. Can't the Trade Unions repudiate them?
So where does Schama fit into this clusterfuck? He jumped straight into Nandy's support, reminding us that Erasmus of Rotterdam was a Dutch humanist, theologian, and scholar of the Northern Renaissance, renowned for his writings, educational reforms, and influence on European intellectual life. And that Europe is the seat of High Art, High Culture, High Intellectual Crap, High History and High Wank and that we should do our level best to crawl back into bed with them. And stuff the British working class. Who are, obv. not High anything, but will do to fight the Russians. Or a bunch of similar bien mots.
Fortunately, Nigel Farage was on hand to refute this nonsense.
And Theo Paphitis, who also had an undiplomatic go at Trump, alleging that Trump was mad, or at least has Dementia, that Trump is a convicted felon, a liable sexual abuser, and a failed businessman who protected Jeffrey Epstein's client records. The Beeb then made Laura read out an on-air disclaimer sixteen minutes later attempting to legally sanitize Paphitis's remarks. Such fun! Who said politics is boring?

Back to mr ishmael, who, in this little piece, reflected on his role as a Blog administrator and the dastardly habit of Bots sneaking into the Comments Section adverts for penis enlargement products:

"The fact that these commentaries, a fortnight after publication, require a blog administrator, that is to say me, to approve further conments, is what I considered to be a pretty suave way of preventing some interesting discussions being rounded-off, weeks later, by advertisements for penis enlargement products.

I had an eye, like all of us, to Posterity, to future historians, people like the RockGod/Archaeologist, Neil Oliver or the hissing, queenly Simon Schama  rummaging through these discussions - wherever the fuck it is that they exist -  and saying, on the global hologram, And this tribe, here, the Ishmaelites, however lofty their discussions on politics and art and religion,  they always descended to talking  about the size of their cocks.
Now, you and I know that these cock-expanding posts are not posts at all but just adverts which  are generated automatically and just appear, almost everywhere,  but great men like Max Hitler Hastings of the Daily Hate and Simon Schama off the telly and Professor Niall Ferguson of the Filth-O-Graph would have been, a hundred years on, whoring themselves out, For the Fallen, you understand, Lest We Forget, old chap, Lest We Forget,

POPPIES.

Oh they're wearing fancy poppies, as they're lined-up in the Mall
But they're no-good, thieving bastards, rotten cowards one and all
Rotten cowards one and all,  lads, rotten cowards one and all
And they're wearing solemn faces, as they're standing in the Mall.

And you'd think that they was 'oly, with their kissers all turned down
And a look so bleedin' pious you'd think the angels 'ad come down,
The angels 'ad come down, me lads, the angels 'ad come down
And blessed 'em all, for bein' such a sorry bunch of clowns.
A sorry bunch of clowns, me lads, all standin' in a row.
Got-up like tailors' dummies, the lowest of the low.

They do this once a year, me lads, the flags and all the tears
But we live with their rottenness, for years and bloody years.

Was the improvised explosive, done the damage to the lads
And they might have fared right better had they been in armoured cabs,
But they never spent the money, so the lads all 'ad it rough
While Bobby Bleedin' Ainsworth, 'ad is nose stuck in the trough,
'is nose stuck in the trough, me lads, 'is nose stuck in the trough.
'E 'ad 'is fingers in our pockets, an' 'is nose stuck in the trough.

Some is living in an 'ostel, some is livin' on the street
There's some 'as got no ears, no eyes, and some 'as got no feet.
And some 'as got no feet me lads, and some 'as got no feet.
Oh, it's hard to go a-marching, when you hasn't got no feet.

And some 'as melted faces, make the children look away,
Make their wives and girlfriends shudder, though they'd never like to say
That there's worser things than dyin', like comin 'ome this way.
They can do wonders, now, with plastic
Or so the doctors say.

And some is off on jailhouse leave, and can't be here today,
The Judge, y'see, he banged 'im up for ever and a day.
'E banged 'im up for fightin; but that's what soldiers do
And when he's got no war to fight, 'e 'as trouble getting through
Trouble getting' through, me lads, when all the shootin' stops
And no-one wants to know 'im, just the prisons and the cops
The prisons and the cops, me lads, stick in a soldier's craw
Cos those what sent 'im killin' is far beyond the law.

If I but stole a fiver, now, from comrade next to me
I'd be on charges, sharpish, there, for everyone to see
They'll never get their collars felt, however much they steal
It's like that Alan Duncan said, a splendid fucking deal.
They write the rules, then break 'em, say they didn't understand.
They're shitting in our faces, up an down the bleedin' land
Shittin' in our faces, just as hard as e'er they can.

Pissin' in our pockets and spitting in our eyes
And travellin' on the gravytrain to the house of bleedin' lies.
An Armistice, all of their own, and no-one got no blame
They just paid a few shillings back and carried on the same.
Carried on the same, me lads, for now and evermore
Stuffed like pigs and drunk with power, while we go off to war.

The members and right honourables know only how to lie
And cheat and steal and fornicate, whilst we march off to die
In some benighted wogland, some jungle, veldt or bush
Or in the hills and mountains of the Hindu bleedin' Kush
The Hindu bleedin' Kush, me lads, you'd think they'd understand
That the killing fields of Afghannystan are No Man's Bleedin' Land.
No Man's Bleedin' Land, me boys, and it was ever thus
They shoot from caves and run away, in the Hindu bleedin' Kush.

There's Charlie in 'is medals, heir to the bleedin' throne,
The one what we're out fightin' for, while he's sitting safe at home.
E'll 'ave yer Mrs, like as not, you give 'im 'alf a chance
He just takes what he wants, you see, it only takes a glance
For he is true nobility, the country's pride and joy
Whilst we are noble savages, cannon fodder to deploy.
They'll send us up to fiery death, and out in unsafe trucks
And when we're blown to Kingdom Come, why, no-one gives a fuck.

But when we come in sixes, with coffins draped in flags
They look a bit embarrassed, like, they're just a bunch of slags
Just a bunch of slags, me lads, all standin' ramrod straight
They'll smile and say So sorry, just a simple twist of fate
I would have gone myself, you know, but I'm important here,
We also serve, we lousy pricks, who only stand and wait.

You can put your bleedin' poppies where the Sun don't never shine
For hypocrisy's your only creed, you ain't no friend of mine
You ain't no friend of no-one's, if the truth was only told
To the boys you send to bleed and die and never to grow old.
It wouldn't do for your sons, all to the manner born
To die alone in foreign fields, forgotten and forlorn
To die alone in foreign fields, forgotten and forlorn
That's the stuff for me and mine, our bodies ripped and torn.

So you can put your bleedin' poppies where the monkey put his nuts
The only thing we've seen from you is cuts and bleedin' cuts'
And some ain't got no bullets and some ain't got no boots
And some are boys of seventeen, just bleedin' young recruits
Bleeding young recruits, me lads, all blown to smithereens,
They never saw their twenty-first, they never left their teens.

See, they're only paper flowers and you're only paper men
And if the call to valour came you'd cut and run again.
But paper flowers, that's the thing, to show you are sincere
And shiny shoes an' overcoats, that's why you're standin' ere.
We're soldiers of the Queen, me lads, and not this sorry bunch
Who steal their houses, dodge their tax and steal their bleedin' lunch
They're one step down from parasite, a squalid learning curve
Lets hope before they meet their end, they get what they deserve.

Oh they're wearing fancy poppies, as they're lined-up in the Mall
But they're no-good, thieving bastards, rotten cowards one and all
Rotten cowards one and all, lads, rotten cowards one and all
And they're wearing solemn faces, as they're standing in the Mall.

If you have not yet purchased your set of the writings of stanislav and mr ishmael, compiled by his friend, mr verge, the house filthster, now might be a good time to secure your copies. Something to read in the shelter. Here's how to buy them from Amazon or Lulu.
Honest Not Invent, Vent Stack, Ishmael’s Blues, and the latest, Flush Test (with a nice picture of the late, much lamented, Mr Harris of Lanarkshire taking a piss on a totem pole) are available from Lulu and Amazon. If you buy from Amazon, it would be nice if you could give a review on their website.
IIshmaelites wishing to buy a copy from lulu should follow these steps
please register an account first, at lulu.com. This is advisable because otherwise paypal seems to think it's ok to charge in dollars, and they then apply their own conversion rate, which might put the price up slightly for a UK buyer. Once the new account is set up, follow one of the links below (to either paperback or hardback) or type "Ishmael’s Blues" into the Lulu Bookstore search box. Click on the “show explicit content” tab, give the age verification box a date of birth such as 1 January 1960, and proceed.

At checkout, try WELCOME15 in the coupon box, which (for the moment) takes 15% off the price before postage. If this code has expired by the time you reach this point, try a google search for "Lulu.com voucher code" and see what comes up.
With the 15% voucher, PB (including delivery to a UK address) should be £16.84; HB £27.04.
