The Sunday Ishmael 10/10/2021

Rowan - Sorbus Aucuparia
It is definitely Autumn,  Ishmaelites, the foraging, hedgewitchery  season, but let us still look to the sunlit uplands, under the blue sky thinking and gaze out onto the clear blue waters, which are not full of migrants come to England to make better life.
Oops, maybe we'd better give the French the £30 million they have requested to pay for increased patrols along the French coast to turn back migrants. Apparently, 12,500 migrants have crossed the Channel and made safe landing this year.  The £30 million could pay for more rubber bullets to stop the problem at source: on September 22nd, allegedly, French police fired rubber bullets at migrants attempting to cross the English Channel. One chap described the shooting, which allegedly took place on September 22, at point blank range. “When the police saw us, they shouted stop. We stopped and they still shot us. Then we ran away as best we could”. It was reported by the Daily Mail that two Iranian Kurds were hospitalised by their injuries, one with a fractured leg, the other with a broken hand. The shooting allegedly occurred on a Dunkirk beach five miles from an area where hundreds of migrants live in camps among the woods awaiting their turn to cross into England. Investigations by French national police authorities into the incident are ongoing. A full and far-reaching cover-up will, no doubt, ensue.

So it seems we now have a UK Health Security Agency. Wow. Will they be armed, this new security agency, all the better to conduct stop, search and insert long probes up nostrils? What sort of uniform?

Not white, as it shows all the stains.
Maybe blood red. Or pus yellow.

Who would be best placed to lead the new agency into containment and control of bio hazards?
A new career adventure for Dame Watercress Cock – even more citizen-suspects to secure and neutralize with maximum and extreme force.

All the Economist Pundits are saying Boris doesn’t understand economics, that his efforts to level up and stop the owners  of companies from growing their British Business Profits through cheap foreign labour are as wrong headed as the repeal of the Corn Laws, that having low-paid workers actually helps the British working man to be prosperous, healthy, well-clothed, shod and fed, and that what needs to happen is that the British working man and woman are employed in highly skilled middleclass jobs whilst foreign labour toils away for tuppence an hour harvesting, waiting tables, making beds for tourists (and jumping into them for a tip), changing nappies and wiping drool off the geriatric population.

Hah! I say to the Economist Pundits – get yourselves into the social housing hinterlands of our Great British Cities and observe for yourselves the generational unemployment and the wholly Alternative Culture in which crime is as normal and accepted as breathing, and is funded in its contrarian attitudes by the state. Observe the breeding grounds of abuse. See uncontrolled  psychopathy stalking the corridors and hallways of tower blocks. See neglected, illiterate, but very clean children reared by American gangsta rap culture and Influencers. Then go away and do some proper economic thinking that will replace this pestilence with full employment, the dignity of work, self-respect and honour.

I’m not saying that this dire state of affairs has been brought about by the welfare state, the nhs and youtube over the last 70 years. After all, Hogarth showed us gin-sodden London reality

Not much change here, then

in the eighteenth century, babies falling from the breast, women evicted into the street through the fecklessness of their husbands who owned them, their dowries and their bodies.

In the nineteenth century Dickens exposed the miseries of the poor.

And in the twentieth century Hitler undertook slum clearance of our major cities, which, incidentally exposed the dreadful living conditions of the majority of the urban population.
Of course there's been progress: we have social media and TV with pretend murders as entertainment rather than public executions. And Food Banks.

I’m complaining that the massive state expenditure aimed at lifting people out of poverty actually seems to have had the reverse effect and there should be a better solution – one that fits together like a dovetail joint the vacant posts with unemployed people in this country.
Maybe not that.
Like the rest of Britain, Orkney cannot fully staff its care homes. Even before Brexit, there were large numbers of vacancies. Agency staff at great expense are brought in, willing enough to work when their housing is provided free of charge, their trips home are paid for and their hourly rate is such that the permanently employed are spitting blood in the local press. You will remonstrate with me and say – mrs ishmael, the unemployed people live in the cities of the south and they don’t want to move to Bloody Orkney.* They are comfortable where they are, surrounded by their families. Well, how come there are Polish people willing to leave their families and travel the length of continental Europe to work in England? How about imbuing British people with some of that spirit of adventure and self-improvement? And provide the financial rewards that will fund that adventure? (As with the agency staff).

*Bloody Orkney

by Captain Hamish Blair - Written whilst on service in Orkney during the Second World War and prompting this response from an Orcadian, which kind of proves Captain Blair's point:

No sense of irony, some people. Huge confidence, though.

I see that American Christian fundamentalist attempts to force women to have babies against their will have suffered a setback. No doubt they will fight back, as they seem to think there’s a people shortage or something.

And, in other news, the Army has been called in to help deal with what the Tories have taken to calling the EFFing issues (Energy, Food, Fuel). So we're alright, then, as mr ishmael reported in 2011:

A FERAL UNDERCLASS 8/9/2011

THE QUEEN'S OWN LANCASHIRE NANCYBOYS.

Brigadier-General Rupert Golightly-Jockstrap today insisted that his men were all splendid fellows, to a manjack of them they do a magnificent job, with great professionalism, grunted the useless bastard. You know, people sitting at home in comfort have no idea how hard it is for heavily armed psychobastards to kick a defenceless civilian to death, dragging entirely blameless nigger individuals from their homes and workplaces, beating them, starving them, sexually assaulting them  and jumping on their heads is real man's work and I'm happy to say that all the men under my command are either capable of doing it to the best of their abilities or of covering it all up and fixing the courts martial; which amounts to the same thing. God Save The Queen.
...................................................................................

Returning to the EFFing issues, Andrew Marr today interviewed a most personable young man, Stephen Fitzpatrick, who explained simply and clearly how the energy industry is fucked. The cheap energy suppliers, to whom all the clever, I-know-best consumers switched their business to save a bob or two, were insufficiently hedged. I shall set about explaining this industry term by way of an unnecessarily complicated analogy, with the help of Donald Rumsfeld, in order to establish my credentials as an Economist Pundit.
The BlogDog, Harris, eats two chickens per week, to liven up his Royal Canin Diabetic kibble. This is a knownknown. I can either buy him a chicken at the point of consumption at £4.00 per chicken, or, when mr Tesco sells chickens at £2.00 each, because they have reached their use by date, I can buy all that are on offer at that price and stick them in the freezer, knowing that tomorrow chicken pricing will revert to the status quo ante. That is another knownknown. As chicken supplier to the Blog Dog, it is in my interests to buy in the chicken at the best available price. If the BlogDog was paying me for supplying chicken, it would be economically illiterate of me to charge him the reduced rate, as, once the cheap chicken had run out, I would have to buy chicken at the normal rate, and if I then start charging him at the normal rate he would bite me. So I could add up the cheap chicken price and the normal chicken price, divide by two and charge that, whilst constantly searching for more cheap chicken. Here come the variables. Should the BlogDog acquire a foster brother or sister with a liking for chicken, the chicken consumer base instantly increases, the cheap chickens run out faster and I have to buy more chickens at the increased price. This is a knownunknown (I think). Having bought in more chickens to fill my freezer, I find another source of cheap chickens at Lidl, calculate that the cost is only going to go up, what with all these EFFing issues, (knownknowns) buy up all Lidl's chickens, pop down the Co-op and buy theirs, go to the white goods store and buy a big chest freezer and fill it with cheap chickens, thus hedging my chicken investment against my known and increased consumer base.
Meanwhile, the BlogDog and his fictional sibling have gone off chicken and want fish as it is better for the planet. (unknownunknown). I have two freezers full of chicken, no consumer base and I need to buy in quantities of fish and another freezer, thus increasing my costs which I cannot hand on as the market has dropped out of chicken and I'm still paying energy costs to keep the damn stuff from thawing. Then there's a big gale causing a week-long power cut and all the chickens rot - they were on their use-by date, remember. This is another unknown unknown. Then the lieges throw milkbottles full of petrol and a lit fuse at my house because I've cornered the market in chickens and they want to do some panic buying. At least this placates my neighbours, as it cooks the rotting chickens which were stinking. The BlogDog and his putative sibling have left home, gone to find Better Life. And I have moved beyond unknown unknowns to absolutely fucked.
There, that's all you could possibly wish to unknown about hedging. Apart from this snippet by mr ishmael:

The Hedging News:

This hedge, a hundred metres long and two and a half metres high, is outside the walled garden and cruelly battered by salty, gale-force winds; an escallonia, it is spreading, above two metres, into tree-like branches, as seen below, from a distance, and there is much dead wood, both inside and on the surface.
Having cut back only a little I am deep in green blood and insects and birds rebuke me. What do other hedgers think? There are no nests, the birds, brown ones, just chill out there and return when the clipping is done. Should I continue to remove a couple of feet, whilst the weather is nice, or should I await early winter, and freeze my bollocks off?
Another mixed hedge, of thorn, rosa rugosa, hebe and escallonia is planted on the left hand, seaward side of the lane and both within a
year or two should give each other some protection from the howling winds.

See? Definition of Hedging : protection from the howling gales.

Back to mr ishmael and his ambivalent relationship with Bob Dylan:

RECORD REVIEW, STORM IN AN OLD MAN'S TEACUP. 28/09/12

warning by mrs ishmael - only click the link if you have full immunity

A DRONING TEMPEST.
Bob Dylan, as a young man, wrote some of the most hurtful and unlovely  songs ever recorded and the Love Generation, well, in a spirit of PeaceandLoveMan,  loved them. The world of Yoof, joined in a spiteful, bilious community sing-song. How does it feel, taunted wee Bob, to be not as clever as me in a musical short man syndrome.

Obvious candidates for the All-Time Nastiest Grammy are Like A Rolling Stone and Positively Fourth Street but there are many more lurking in the albums, the bootlegs, the outtakes;  Ballad in Plain D savages the sister and mother of the girl he was unable to dominate, as though it was their fault that she had a mind of her own and eschewed the dwarf gunslinger's eternal bitching.
Ballad in Plain D
I once loved a girl, her skin it was bronze, with the innocence of a lamb, she was gentle like a fawn. I courted her proudly but now she is gone, gone as the season she's taken. In a young summer's youth, I stole her away from her mother and sister, though close did they stay, each one of them suffering from the failures of their day. With strings of guilt they tried hard to guide us. Of the two sisters, I loved the young with sensitive instincts, she was the creative one. The constant scapegoat, she was easily undone by the jealousy of others around her. For her parasite sister, I had no respect. Bound by her boredom, her pride to protect countless visions of the other she'd reflect as a crutch for her scenes and her society. Myself, for what I did, I cannot be excused, the changes I was going through can't even be used. For the lies that I told her in hopes not to lose the could-be dream-lover of my lifetime. With unseen consciousness, I possessed in my grip a magnificent mantelpiece, though its heart being chipped, noticing not that I'd already slipped to the sin of love's false security. From silhouetted anger to manufactured peace answers of emptiness, voice vacancies 'till the tombstones of damage read me no questions but, "Please what's wrong and what's exactly the matter?" And so it did happen like it could have been foreseen the timeless explosion of fantasy's dream. At the peak of the night, the king and the queen tumbled all down into pieces. "The tragic figure!" her sister did shout "Leave her alone, god damn you, get out!" And I in my armor, turning about and nailing her in the ruins of her pettiness. Beneath a bare light bulb the plaster did pound her sister and I in a screaming battleground and she in between, the victim of sound soon shattered as a child to the shadows. All is gone, all is gone, admit it, take flight I gagged in contradiction, tears blinding my sight. My mind it was mangled, I ran into the night leaving all of love's ashes behind me. The wind knocks my window, the room it is wet, the words to say I'm sorry, I haven't found yet, I think of her often and hope whoever she's met will be fully aware of how precious she is.
Ah, my friends from the prison, they ask unto me "How good, how good does it feel to be free?" And I answer them most mysteriously "Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?"

The Sunday Ishmael 3/10/21

What it is to have a learned Prime Minister. But that Andrew Marr; he didn't turn a hair when Johnson lobbed Hecatomb* into the argument that they were having this morning. Indeed, Marr was very brave when Johnson's body language became positively adversarial:

Well, Marr had persisted in goading Bojo about the pigs: 120,000 pigs to be killed and incinerated in 10 days' time if Bojo doesn't solve the driver crisis - to which he responded:
"I hate to break it to you, Andrew, but our food processing industry does involve the killing of a lot of animals. Your viewers need to understand that."
Fighting back gamely, Marr attempted to explain the difference between killing to provide food and killing wastefully, when Boris assured him that:
"I wouldn't dream of blaming you, Andrew, in spite of everything you are trying to do."
When throwing in the hecatomb of pigs line didn't shut Marr up, Boris told him "you are talking total nonsense".
As usual, attempting to interview Johnson is like herding cats.
Not the finger!
Marr threw in - "This is bluster" to which Johnson replied magisterially, "No, it's not."
The hand
When Johnson deployed the hand things looked tough for Marr, but realising that it wouldn't make great PR to physically attack, on camera, a man with left-body paralysis sustained in a stroke, Johnson restrained himself. Good practice, no doubt, for the Conservative Conference.

*Hecatomb: a great public sacrifice, originally of a hundred oxen, now 120,000 pigs.

Anyway, our Prime Minister has instructed the nation to trust the police. In the teeth of all evidence to the contrary, including the current advice to women approached by a police officer to shout Help, knock on nearby doors, jump on a bus or run away, Bo-Jo the former Ho-Ho would like us  to trust the police as they are "overwhelmingly trustworthy". Andy Burnham disagrees, accepting that women are not safe in Manchester, that misogynism is rife in all police forces and that he had to sack Ian Hopkins as Chief Constable after Greater Manchester Police Force was effectively placed in Special Measures in December 2020 when a damning inspection found that one in five crimes were not recorded and more than 80,000 crimes had not been properly investigated. Burnham  appointed Stephen Watson as Chief Constable, and today linked his fortune with Watson's, declaring that if things had not improved in two years' time, they would both go. Watson has already had to "humbly apologise" after another highly critical report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services which said that GMP was still failing in its response to vulnerable victims of crime.
Since Sarah Everard's abduction, rape and death at the hands of a serving police officer, jocularly known to his colleagues as "the Rapist" whose habit of exposing himself and driving semi-naked was widely known; 79 women have been murdered. That was only six months ago. In the last five years, 26 police officers have been convicted of sex offences. Between 2009 and 2021, 16 women have been murdered by serving or retired police officers. 13 of them were killed by a current or former partner, one by a social acquaintance, one by her son and one, Sarah Everard, by a stranger. Violence against women and children by police officers that falls short of murder includes domestic violence, rape, voyeurism with hidden cameras, the accessing and making of child pornography, taking and circulating offensive photographs of female murder victims, dismissive and disbelieving attitudes towards women who report rape, and a locker room culture that supports colleagues when women report crime.  The term "thin blue line" refers to the concept of the police as the line which keeps society from descending into violent chaos. Increasingly, it is becoming understood that the police are a part of and perpetuate that violent chaos. The blue wall of silence refers to  the code  among police officers not to report a colleague's errors, misconducts, or crimes, including police brutality, and, when questioned, to perjure themselves by feigning ignorance of another officer's wrongdoing.
Information from the Femicide Census

There's more - undercover police officers who, on instruction from their senior officers, dupe women into false relationships.
Kate Wilson, who worked in the Sumac Centre in Nottingham, has just won an Investigatory Powers Tribunal case for breaches of her human rights. Mark Kennedy, a married serving police officer, posed as an environmental campaigner in Nottingham in 2003 to infiltrate the Sumac Centre on the instructions of his senior officers. He duped Kate Wilson, along with 10 other women, into sexual relationships during his deployment. Ms Wilson discovered the truth of the situation in 2010 and took legal action against the Met and the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC). In its ruling, the Tribunal found the Met's claims that undercover police officers knew sexual relationships were banned were "materially undermined by the sheer frequency with which (Kennedy) (and other UCOs) did conduct sexual relationships without either questions being asked or action being taken by senior officers".
"We are driven to the conclusion that either senior officers were quite extraordinarily naive, totally unquestioning or chose to turn a blind eye to conduct which was, certainly in the case of [Kennedy], useful to the operation," the Tribunal added.
The Sumac Centre, by the way, provides resources and a meeting space for groups and individuals working to promote social justice, environmental awareness, peace and animal rights.

The Tribunal also found the Met and NPCC's failure to guard against the risk of undercover officers entering into sexual relationships with women amounted to unlawful discrimination against women, concluding: "This is not just a case about a renegade police officer who took advantage of his undercover deployment to indulge his sexual proclivities, serious though this aspect of the case unquestionably is. Our findings that the authorisations under [the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000] were fatally flawed and the undercover operation could not be justified as 'necessary in a democratic society' ... reveal disturbing and lamentable failings at the most fundamental levels."

The "one bad apple" defence, so beloved of Cressida Dick, is wearing thin. We have always known, here in ishmaelia, that all coppers are bastards, but wider society is now increasingly becoming aware that the whole barrel of apples is systemically, institutionally, rotten to the core, and is demanding that something be done about it. Make a start with sacking Cressida, all the Chief Constables and senior managers and appointing instead graduate managers who have never worked for the police or any other uniformed institution.

Boris, sir, your exhortation to the nation to trust the police is falling on deaf ears.

Do you remember the case of Custody Sergeant Mark Andrews and his very bloody handling of Pamela Somerville who was arrested for sitting in her car in 2010? mr ishmael had a few words to say:
Official: All Coppers are Bastards. But its Okay. 21st November 2010

A DUTY OF CARE.
I HAVE IT, YOU HAVE IT,
 HE DOESN'T HAVE IT.

The judge said that after the four-day hearing he was satisfied that Andrews did not intend to throw Somerville into the cell and that injuries she suffered were probably caused by her falling to the floor after letting go of the door frame. Or some such bollocks.

Maybe, after Sergeant Plod had thrown her to the floor, she got up, got hold of the doorframe, let go of it again and threw herself down again. So it was all her fault, clearly.
Never mind, Judge Bean said that Sergeant Plod might have done things better.  These wimmen, eh, we all know what they're like, such a trial to a man doing a difficult job.

mrs ishmael's note:

Sgt Mark Andrews was jailed in 2010 for assaulting 60-year-old Pamela Somerville, then had his conviction quashed on appeal. He was sacked by Wiltshire Police but an appeals tribunal ordered him to be reinstated.

We demand a full and far-reaching cover-up

As the BBC is broadcasting  their own series Blair and Brown: the New Labour Revolution, you may be interested in mr ishmael's review of a book that documented those exciting times:

The Book Review:

THE TURD MAN 16/11/2010

`A compelling account of the New Labour years...nearly every page is illuminating.' --Steve Richards, Independent

`He has written a good book...informative, clear and containing refreshing doses of self-knowledge, occasional regret and thoughtfulness.' --Andrew Marr, Financial Times

`A revealing and important book by a more winning individual than I had expected to encounter.' --Matthew Parris, Spectator

`The Third Man contains enough gossip, intrigue and scandal to keep the cognoscenti titillated...there are valuable nuggets scattered throughout.' --Peter Hain, New Statesman

`An utterly absorbing read, a rich and satisfying page-turner ...this is a vital book, and a pleasure to read.'
--John McTernan, Scotsman

`A very good book...fluently written and substantial, this is a serious book by a serious man.' --Matthew d'Ancona, Sunday Telegraph

`Mandelson has added heavily to the sum total of political knowledge...The Third Man is well-written, pacier in parts than others, particularly those where the author deals with the psychodrama of which he was an integral part...a significant contribution to our understanding of the Labour years.'
--Philip Webster, The Times.

Shit, innit, all of it, fucking rubbish, a nuisance, like pisstain on trouser of History. - the Polish Plumbers' Weekly.

I doubt that any of these critics read Mandelstein's book, apart from me, it's nearly six hundred fucking pages. Maybe Marr got one of his unofficial wives or children to read it for him, maybe Matthew Dreary read it whilst cruising Clapham Common but it is hard to imagine any of these bozos reading every word of every page, as well as all the other books which they are paid to review; no, it's bollocks. I read at slighlty above the average rate - 300wpm and with a comprehension rate of 90%, considerably higher than average - and I couldn't finish this in a week.

This is a book which suffocates the reason. Mandelstein does not - cannot - ever consider the possibility that he may have been wrong, personally or politically or that his birth into privilege may have blighted normal judgement, that a spoiled Momma's boy like he would only ever view the world as his personal plaything.

Every aspect of his pampered existence is blessed, his wonderful parents - a pair of pushy political toads - his wonderful grandfather, a postwar, minor Labour figure and more very dear friends than one could count; excellent school, blissful holidays, feasting at Oxford with shitbag luminaries like David Aaronobitch, media sinecures, divine meals, scintillating conversations with important people - in short an utter fucking waster, never done a day's work in his life, good for fuck all; much in common, one suspects, with the turd polishers above, all, one way or another, sucking the Murdoch Knob of World Domination.

Mandelstein sees nothing awry in he and two co-conspirators, Brown and Blair, spinning, as he tells it, old Labour out of existence, is entirely unapologetic about lying, as a matter of course, to journalists - many of them, of course, like Jon Snow, the insufferable Job-For-Life arsehole at Channel Four News, very dear friends - because he was, and how could he be other, doing it in the national interest, it was in the national interest that he and Brown and Blair piss all over the country, all he had ever wanted to do was serve the best interests of the country.

Slithering up - and down - the greasy pole, Mandelstein describes his cronies as dear friends, as if their mutual back-scratching, pocket-lining and cocksucking was thus made noble, all the Labour luvvies seriously relaxed about people being filthy rich, especially themselves. How much was it, again, that the ridiculous ClearBlue John Birt charged us, via the BBC, for his wisdom and skill?
It has long been an article of faith, here, that the NewLabour Project was devised and executed by four seriously aberrant, disturbed individuals, well placed, by accident and media, to suborn normal political checks and balances and to be panderers to a media long past shame. Mandelstein and poor, drunken, bullying, depressive, closet gay, Big Al Campbell, played pass the shit parcel with Truth.

Evensong: Jenny Quick

Hum to the Broch of Gurness

Composed and played at the Broch of Gurness in Orkney by Jenny Quick.

Information derived from Orkneyjar.com

Until the summer of 1929 there was a massive, grassy mound by the shore, known as the Knowe o' Aikerness. Robert Rendall, Orkney writer and antiquarian, was sketching on the knowe (hill),when one of the legs of his stool sank into the ground. On removing some of the  stones, he found a staircase leading down into the mound.  Excavation began that year and, for the first time in centuries, the broch and its outbuildings were revealed.

The broch as it is today

Built between  200 BC and 100 BC,  originally around 26 feet high, with an internal diameter of 65 ft, the broch was a defensive tower, surrounded by small stone dwellings. The whole site was circled by outer defences comprising a band of three ramparts and three ditches. All the available space between the tower and the outer defences was filled by semi-detached stone houses, partitioned to form living areas each containing a hearth, stone furniture and a recognisable toilet. This fortified village housed around 40 families.
Entry to the broch was by processional passage
, lined by houses, on the eastern side of the settlement.

The broch's defensive role decreased over time, until around 100AD, after years of neglect, it was finally abandoned and its upper sections dismantled to provide  building materials for later houses in the area. The structure that remains today is, at its highest, 11.5 feet tall, with a solid base. There are small cells in the  hollow section of the wall, on either side of the main entrance.  In one house there is an underground cellar, containing a still visible spring-filled water tank.

It remains a massive, imposing
site, hard by the sea. For those with the skill and imagination to recreate the past in their mind's eye, people the houses and streets, fill the air with shouts, laughter and the workings of tools, it is romantic and haunting in its current abandonment. Best to visit in the brightness of a summer night, when the tour buses from the cruise liners have departed, and you can wander around unimpeded. Jenny Quick's little Hum  provides a perfect soundtrack for this deserted community, built two and a half thousand years ago, with the Orkney wind a constant soundscape.
